Why I Started The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health

If you had told me years ago that I would one day start my own behavioral health company, I probably would not have believed you.

Like many meaningful journeys, The Mustard Seed did not begin with a business plan.

It began with people.

It began with relationships.

It began with a desire to make a difference.

And it began with a tiny seed of an idea that slowly grew into something much bigger.

Where It All Started

My journey into this field was not a straight path.

Before entering the world of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), I worked in education and behavioral health settings where I had the opportunity to support individuals with diverse needs.

One of my earliest experiences was working in a classroom serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was there that I discovered something that would ultimately shape the course of my career.

I loved the work.

I loved building relationships.

I loved helping individuals learn new skills and experience success.

Most importantly, I loved getting to know the incredible people behind the diagnoses.

That experience sparked a passion that eventually led me to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), earn my degree in psychology, pursue graduate studies in ABA, and later become a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA).

Throughout that journey, one thing remained constant:

I never lost sight of the people at the center of the work.

The Families Who Changed Me

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with many children and families.

Each family brought unique strengths, challenges, perspectives, and experiences.

While I have taught skills, developed programs, and supported goals, the truth is that families have taught me just as much as I have ever taught them.

They taught me resilience.

They taught me patience.

They taught me creativity.

They taught me the power of celebrating small victories.

Most importantly, they reminded me that progress is not always measured in major milestones.

Sometimes progress looks like:

A child asking for help for the first time.

A family successfully navigating a difficult community outing.

A parent feeling confident enough to try a new strategy.

A child discovering they are capable of something they once thought was impossible.

Those moments matter.

Seeing a Need for Something More

As I continued growing professionally, I found myself thinking more deeply about the kind of services I wanted families to receive.

I wanted families to feel heard.

I wanted children to feel respected.

I wanted caregivers to feel supported rather than judged.

I wanted services that focused not only on reducing challenges, but also on building meaningful skills, confidence, independence, and quality of life.

I wanted a company culture built on compassion, collaboration, and relationships.

I wanted families to feel like partners.

I wanted children to feel like people first.

The more I reflected on these values, the more I realized I wanted to create something that embodied them completely.

That dream eventually became The Mustard Seed.

Why the Name "The Mustard Seed"?

The mustard seed has always held special meaning for me.

In faith, the mustard seed is often used as a symbol of hope, growth, and the power of small beginnings.

That symbolism resonated deeply with me because it reflects what I see every day in this work.

Meaningful growth rarely happens overnight.

It happens one small step at a time.

One new word.

One successful interaction.

One moment of courage.

One opportunity to learn.

One small victory that eventually becomes something much larger.

Just as a tiny mustard seed can grow into something remarkable, children can achieve incredible things when given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.

The Mustard Seed Way

The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health was built on a few simple beliefs:

  • Relationships matter.

  • Every child deserves to be heard.

  • Families are essential partners.

  • Growth looks different for everyone.

  • Progress is worth celebrating.

  • Compassion and evidence-based practice can coexist.

  • Children should never have to sacrifice their individuality in order to learn.

These beliefs influence every aspect of our work.

They shape how we teach.

They shape how we support families.

They shape how we build relationships.

And they shape the culture we hope to create for both the families and staff who become part of The Mustard Seed community.

Looking Toward the Future

The Mustard Seed is more than a business to me.

It is the realization of a dream that has been growing for years.

It is an opportunity to serve families in a way that reflects my values, my experiences, and my belief in the incredible potential of every child.

As we continue to grow, my hope is that The Mustard Seed becomes a place where families feel welcomed, supported, respected, and empowered.

A place where children can build meaningful skills while remaining fully themselves.

A place where small seeds of growth are nurtured every single day.

The story of The Mustard Seed is still being written.

And like all meaningful growth, it began with a small seed.

Small seeds. Big growth. Together.
